SALYERSVILLE – A Floyd County man died as a result of a two-vehicle collision on the Mountain Parkway in Salyersville Friday night.

On October 16 shortly before receiving the call regarding the fatal collision, Magoffin County 911 records indicate that several calls had been made reporting a commercial van, which matched the description of the van involved in the wreck, was traveling erratically near the Ivyton Hill, almost side-swiping another vehicle and guardrails on both sides of the road.

Less than 20 minutes later, just before 9 p.m., crews were called to the fatal wreck, occurring on East Mountain Parkway at the 68 mile marker.

According to Kentucky State Police, 36-year-old Joey Lewis, of Banner, was operating a 2000 Ford Econoline cargo van in the westbound lane of the Mountain Parkway when his vehicle crossed the centerline, side-swiping a 2019 GMC Acadia, operated by 65-year-old William Turner, of Garrett.

Lewis was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene by the Magoffin County Coroner’s Office.
The scene of the wreck spanned approximately 200 feet, indicating speed was a contributing factor, with Lewis reportedly passing away from blunt force trauma.

Toxicology reports are pending at press time and Lewis’ body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
Both occupants of the Acadia were taken to the hospital for what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The case remains under investigation by KSP Accident Reconstructionist Trooper John Dixon, as well as by Magoffin County Deputy Coroner Brian Parker.

KSP was also assisted on scene by the Magoffin County Rescue Squad and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.
