REJUVENATED HORNETS SET TO HOST MARTIN COUNTY

SALYERSVILLE – After beating visiting Betsy Layne 36-8 in a season opener, Magoffin County is set to host Martin County in a Week 2 matchup on Friday, Sept. 18.

SALYERSVILLE – After beating visiting Betsy Layne 36-8 in a season opener, Magoffin County is set to host Martin County in a Week 2 matchup on Friday, Sept. 18.

Magoffin County and Martin County are familiar high school football rivals. The Cardinals defeated the Hornets 22-6 when the two teams met in Inez during the 2019 high school football season.

Each team will carry a 1-0 record into the upcoming game. Martin County outlasted Phelps 52-40 on the road in another season opener on Friday, Sept. 11.

Magoffin County amassed 438 yards of total offense in its win over Betsy Layne in Week 1.

Quarterback Lucas Litteral passed for 199 yards and three touchdowns for the Hornets. On the ground, Magoffin County rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to connecting through the air, Litteral rushed for one touchdown in the Hornets’ victory.

Caleb Howard and Aden Barnett combined to rush six times for 186 yards and one touchdown for the Hornets.

A pair of Magoffin County receivers, Brad Standifer and Isaiah Salyer, combined to haul in six receptions for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively in Week 1, Magoffin County posted 44 tackles, six tackles for losses and four sacks.

Martin County amassed 499 yards of total offense in its season opener. Thriving on the ground, Martin County rushed 54 times for 484 yards and seven touchdowns.

Kolby Sparks led Martin County to the win over Phelps, rushing 15 times for 242 yards and two touchdowns. In another solid offensive performance for Martin County, Logan Proctor rushed 20 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Charles Bowen attempted only three passes during the Cardinals’ season opener.

Bowen completed one pass for 15 yards in Martin County’s victory over Phelps.

Martin County, under the direction of head coach Josh Muncy, competes in Class 2A, District 8.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Martin County football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
